Johnny Walker dead

MUMBAI JULY 29. Johnny Walker, comedian of yesteryear, died this afternoon at his residence in northwest Mumbai after a prolonged illness, family members said. He was 79 and is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters. Mr. Walker's real name was Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi. His actor son, Nasir, was by his side when he breathed his last.

Mr. Walker started working as a bus conductor and was spotted by the legendary Balraj Sahani entertaining some passengers with his witticism. One day pretending to be drunk, Mr. Walker walked up to director Guru Dutt. The latter snapped him up for the role in `Baazi' in 1951 and he was renamed `Johnny Walker' after the famous scotch brand.

He became a household name for his role in `CID', a Guru Dutt production.
