TRAI allows SMS in WLL phones

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 31. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has allowed basic phone companies to offer short messaging service (SMS) to their subscribers.

The decision will greatly increase the attractiveness of the limited mobility (WLL) phones being offered by a host of companies as an alternative to cellular phones.

The TRAI interpreted a basic service licence condition and assessed existing international practices, while permitting voice and non-voice messages over the licensees' network in the service area.

Cellular operators who have opposed the policy framework permitting limited mobility in basic phones did not oppose the move. "It shouldn't be stopped," said a senior official of one of the leading cellular companies.
