Troops leave for Congo

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 31. A company of 10 Garhwal Rifles tonight left for Congo to join the United Nations peace-keeping operations there. The company comprising 90 personnel and led by B. Mandal is to provide security to a 250-strong aviation unit of the Indian Air Force, which is in the final stages of moving to the country.

This is the second time that India is participating in such an operation in Congo. Two brigades of troops (12,000 men) were last deployed in the Central African nation between 1960 and 1964.

The remaining detachment of 10 Garhwal Rifles led by Shivendra Singh has been earmarked for the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon where it will replace 8 Sikh, the `Tiger Hill' heroes. A battalion of 15 Sikh Light Infantry recently embarked for U.N. peace-keeping operations in Ethiopia-Eritrea replacing another Indian battalion, 27 Rajput.
