Train accident: inquiry suggests preventive measures

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 1. Preliminary inquiry into the derailment of 904 UP Karwar-Mumbai Central Holiday Special has shown that the accident was caused "due to failure of the right side slope of cutting, resulting in obstruction on track".

Fifty-two passengers were killed in the accident that occurred on June 22 between Vaibhavawadi and Rajapur Road stations of Konkan Railway.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety who is conducting the statutory inquiry has advised Konkan Railway to continue preventive measures such as speed restrictions in cutting deeper than 12 metres, local patrolling and slowing down of trains during heavy rain.
