His relatives believe that Ibrahim, who was born in India, was the victim of a visa racket. Ibrahim had been put on a ship which he was told by his travel agent was bound for a Gulf country where he would get employment. But he had to disembark in Karachi. That was 35 years ago. His relatives said Ibrahim worked as a labourer in Pakistan for nearly nine years, and when he tried to return home he found that it would be easier to get a visa to India if he had a Pakistan passport. For this purpose he took Pakistan citizenship. Upon reaching his village, as a Pakistan citizen, Ibrahim married a woman of the locality. The couple has two daughters. Soon the police found out about his citizenship status. Ibrahim, who was making his living as a fish vendor, evaded the police for some time. Meanwhile, representations seeking Indian citizenship for him were sent to the Home Ministry. However, the police soon took him into custody and produced him in court. The police say that a number of Pakistani citizens who are Indians by birth are in India. Some have obtained court orders against their deportation, but some others, like Ibrahim, have been detected and deported. Ibrahim's relatives are worried about his future in Pakistan since he may not have any document with him now to prove his Pakistani citizenship either.
