Quota for sportspersons in Police, Excise depts.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 1. The Sports Ministry has asked the Government to set apart a fixed quota of jobs for sportspersons in Police, Jail, Fire Force and Excise Departments, the Sports Minister, K. Sudhakaran, has said.

Replying to the questions of Raju Abraham and K.C. Venugopal in the Assembly today, Mr. Sudhakaran, who is also in charge of the Forest, said this norm would be implemented in the Forest Department soon. The Ministry had also urged the Government to raise the quota for sportspersons in public sector undertakings from 20 to 40 per cent, he said.

A project to provide training and proper diet to school students, who excelled in sports and games, with the support of local self-Government institutions, had been drawn up. The project would be inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram this month.

Replying to the questions of K.K. Jayachandran, P. Jayarajan, Saju Paul and Raju Abraham, Mr. Sudhakaran said that during 2001-2002, the Kerala Forest Research Institute had got Rs. 54,47,261 from various agencies for research projects and Rs. 17,47,029 in 2002-2003. The institute got $16,071.40 from the Ford Foundation during 2001-02, he said.

The Agriculture Minister, K.R. Gouri, said that the Government had no plans to form a welfare fund or give pension to farmers.

There was a fall of Rs. 18 crores in the income from the sale of Government lottery during the past two years, the Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, told Prathapa Varma Thampan in a written reply. The online lottery of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Karnataka were being sold in the State, he said.
