Temple tank highly polluted: report

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 1. A bacteriological examination has revealed that the water in the Mitranandapuam temple tank was polluted in excess of the normal limits and that it contained toxic matter which could be dangerous.

The test conducted at the Water Analyst's Section of the Public Health Laboratory indicated that the water in the tank "was turbid with suspended impurities in plenty along with algae matter''. The report further stated that the "water was highly polluted and hence unfit for any domestic purpose''.

The result showed that alkalinity in the sample was 196 parts per million, the total solids reading was 4,320 ppm and hardness, 240 ppm.

The initiative for conducting the test was taken by the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Kshethra Karmachari Sanghom. It is the prevailing custom that the priests of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple should bathe in this tank before entering the temple. The staff of the temple had been complaining that they were contracting skin diseases and respiratory ailments as a result .

The sanghom has accused the authorities concerned of being indifferent to the issue especially at a time when dengue fever and such other infectious diseases were spreading in the city.

It has also decided to clean up the tank on its own, without any further delay.
