The technique involves removal of immature eggs from a woman's ovary and maturing them in hormones and the mother's blood in a laboratory dish from 28 to 36 hours. The eggs are then fertilised by direct sperm injection and the resulting embryos are implanted in the womb. This technique is used for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and those who are infertile due to other reasons. It can be used for fertile women whose partners are infertile or have low sperm count. The baby boy was born on July 31 to a Bangalore-based couple. They have been childless for seven years. Sulochana Gunasheela, scientific director of the centre, and Varsha Samson Roy, embryologist, headed a team that achieved this feat. Dr. Gunasheela claimed that there were no reported cases of babies born through this technique earlier in the country. "It is a fairly new technique, and 15 centres in the world specialise in this kind of treatment. "Only 250 babies have been born through the procedure of invitro maturation (IVM) of eggs,'' she said. The centre had treated two more women through this technique. The babies were expected in five months. Some women with polycystic ovary could be candidates for a condition called hyper-stimulation syndrome, but as the eggs were only partially stimulated in IVM, there were fewer chances of their acquiring the syndrome, Dr. Gunasheela said.
