Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Supreme Court was right in suggesting that steps be initiated to enact a uniform civil code as mandated by Article 44 of the Constitution. The Article has become a dead letter, partly because of genuine apprehensions of the minorities and partly because of vote bank politics. A uniform civil code does not contemplate the imposition of Hindu customs on other communities. The codification will be comprehensive, and will incorporate reforms in all the personal laws.
N. Krishna Murthy,
Sir, Parties are using the issue to serve their own ends. The BJP, supported by the RSS, is for a uniform civil code . But the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the communists and other non-BJP parties have taken the stand which does not endorse the Supreme Court's views. When this is the case, it is futile to take the issue any further.
Mumtaz Ali Khan,
