DCs told to use funds for providing work, water

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Aug. 4. The Government has authorised Deputy Commissioners in the districts to re-appropriate Rs.81 crores with them under different heads for providing work for the needy and for drinking water needs, the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, has said.

In reply to points raised by members in the Legislative Assembly on Monday on the memorandum submitted to the Union Government on tackling drought, Mr. Kharge, who heads a Cabinet Sub-committee on drought, took exception to the BJP which, he said, ``behaved as if the funds granted by the Union Government were its own''.

Referring to the walkout by the BJP group, Mr. Kharge said it should realise that the States also contributed by way of excise duty to the funds of the Union Government.

In reply to another point, Mr. Kharge said the Government would direct the authorities concerned to take up works relating to repairs and regeneration of borewells that had gone dry.
