Bakery case: Modi to write to President

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR AUG. 4. The Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, wishes to write to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, requesting him to make public all the court rulings in connection with the communal riots in various States since Independence.

Hitting hard at those who were blaming the Gujarat judiciary for the acquittal of all the accused in the Best Bakery case for want of evidence, Mr. Modi said today that such a list would be an eye-opener for the people that in most such mob attacks proper evidence was hard to come by.

He said that only the vested interests opposed to the development of Gujarat were raising such a hue and cry to malign the State and spreading misinformation about the security arrangements, instead of fighting terrorism. "The same vested interests had earlier opposed the construction of the Narmada dam and were now raising issues concerning the security of the State and the country."

Mr. Modi was distributing dividend certificates offered by the Gandhinagar Nagarik Sahakari Bank to the commando and the policemen killed in action during the terrorist attack on the Akshardham Swaminarayan temple last year as well as the innocent victims from the public in the attack.

"Anti-Gujarat forces were still active "to conspire against and malign Gujarat," the Chief Minister said, adding the country was governed by a federal structure under the Constitution with rights of the States in tact. The role of the judiciary and the legal machinery was also well defined and it was high time the people realised the interests of society and the nation. "Gujarat knows how to protect its self-respect and I will continue to fight for the pride of five crore Gujaratis,' he said.
