Muthiah Chettiar award for S. V. Subramanian

CHENNAI AUG. 5. The ``Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award'' was today presented to S.V. Subramanian, Honorary Director, Academy of Tamil Education, Tamilur in Tirunelveli district.

Instituted by the Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust, the award, carrying Rs.1 lakh in cash and a citation, was presented on the occasion of 99th birth anniversary of M.A.Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad. The award is given every year to persons with outstanding contribution in education, arts, literature, drama and economics.

P. Sathasivam, judge of the Madras High Court, who presented the award to Dr. Subramanian, paid tributes to Muthiah Chettiar for his services to the cause of Tamil and fostering Tamil music and culture. Muthiah Chettiar led a simple life and treated his employees equally and with affection. Mr. Justice Sathasivam complimented the trust for its efforts towards welfare of society and in the field of education.

The citation, read out on the occasion by the trust president, M.A.M.R. Muthiah, said Dr. Subramanian had won several awards. The Sahitya Akademi conferred the Bhasha Samman 1999 for his contribution to classical and medieval literature. He had contributed to the development of Tamil culture and tradition through his writings and speeches. Dr. Subramanian said the award would motivate him further in his efforts to the cause of Tamil and Tamil education.

The Annamalai University Pro-Chancellor, and trust patron, M.A.M. Ramaswamy; former Tamil University Vice-Chancellor, Avvai Natarajan, and trust secretary, AR. Ramaswamy, spoke.
