Sports : General
Speculation has been rife over the issue after the minister stuck to his stand that there could only be one Khel Ratna awardee. The Arjuna Award selection committee had picked star athlete K.M. Beenamol and rifle shooter Anjali Bhagwat-Vedpathak for the award. Twenty-one names were forwarded for the Arjuna Award as against the prescribed limit of 15 plus one disabled sportsperson. The Sports Minister, Mr. Vikram Verma, had said that the numbers could not be allowed to cross 16 and hence he would return the list to the committee for pruning.
"Now that the list has come out in the media, it would be embarrassing for all if any names are deleted at this point,'' he said. The IOA president said that he met Mr. Verma and requested him to make an exception this time. According to Mr. Kalmadi, the Sports Minister took the suggestion positively.
