Synchronising polls untenable: Dwivedi

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 6. The senior Congress leader, Devendra Nath Dwivedi, has flayed the suggestion of the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, of simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and Assemblies, and termed it Constitutionally untenable.

Responding to the argument that such a move would allow governments to take hard decisions and save election expenditure, Mr. Dwivedi said on Tuesday that this was "yet another evidence of the kind of `confusion of vision' which has become the hallmark of the Vajpayee Government''.

Mr. Dwivedi, former Additional Solicitor General of India, said the proposal was devoid of any merit, reflected poor understanding of the Constitutional scheme and was fraught with grave consequences for the country's parliamentary-cum-federal system of governance.
