Deadline for Star News ends

NEW DELHI AUG. 6. Amid indications that permission to Star for temporary uplinking of its news channel would not be denied, the deadline for permission expired tonight without the Government taking a decision.

Information and Broadcasting Ministry sources said a decision on whether to give the channel another extension would be taken tomorrow as the Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and officials were busy in Parliament today. The two-week extension given to Star News ends midnight today but the channel would continue to be on air in the present format in view of a court stay restraining VSNL from switching off its signals. Star's application for uplinking is being examined by an inter-ministerial group. — PTI
