`I offered to show CVC report'

NEW DELHI AUG. 7. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, said today that he offered to show the Central Vigilance Commission's findings on arms deals to the Public Accounts Committee Chairman, Buta Singh, who denied the offer was ever made.

Mr. Fernandes asserted that the CVC report on defence deals contained "top secret documents of the CBI and IB". Still "we had offered to show the CVC report to the PAC chairman. We had made a similar offer to N.D. Tiwari when he was chairman of the PAC".

Denying the Minister's claim, Mr. Singh said he had met Mr. Fernandes only once in the presence of the Speaker when he had declined to show the CVC report to either of them. Mr. Fernandes said security affairs needed the utmost vigil and care. "They (PAC) are asking us to open CBI and IB documents. Tomorrow, they will ask us to open the borders too."

Mr. Fernandes was speaking informally to presspersons after the Opposition forced adjournment of the Lok Sabha to protest the Defence Ministry's refusal to submit the CVC report to the PAC. — PTI
