BJP condemns stalling of LS by Opposition

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 8. The Bharatiya Janata Party today "strongly condemned'' the "reprehensible'' attitude of the Opposition, which "forced adjournment'' of Parliament ahead of schedule today also although there was agreement in the Business Advisory Committee yesterday on the agenda to be taken up till the end of the session.

The BJP spokesperson, V.K. Malhotra, pointed out that the Lok Sabha was stalled even in the midst of a debate on atrocities against Dalits even though the Opposition had wanted that debate.

He also termed as "unacceptable'' the Opposition demand that the Prime Minister should respond to a debate on the Public Accounts Committee controversy related to the Kargil war defence purchases. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, was willing to make a statement on the issue, he insisted. Mr. Malhotra said that all documents, including minutes of the PAC meetings, should be tabled in Parliament. He pointed out that the last time a discussion relating to a report of the PAC took place in Parliament was in 1966, after a Minister's statement.
