Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
According to PWD sources, water was flowing in at the rate of 10,000 cusecs at Srisailam on Friday, but the Krishna river basin was yet to receive anything significant. The storage at the Kandaleru reservoir, which is the feeder to the city system under the Krishna Water Scheme, stood at 3.6 tmcft on Friday. This had to increase to 6 tmcft if the supply was to commence in the Kandaleru-Poondi canal.
Meanwhile, Metrowater officials said the alternate day supply was around 250 million litres. The daily supply to industries varied from 47 and 50 million litres a day.
The combined storage at the city reservoirs on Saturday was 674 mcft out of a capacity of 7,412 mcft. Metrowater is currently drawing 6 mcft a day from the Red Hills reservoir, depending mainly on its groundwater resources in Tiruvallur district. It was drawing nearly 100 million litres a day from its well fields as well as hired agricultural fields.
The city supply was being met by tanker trips to the tune of 40 million litres a day, the rest was being supplied through water pipes on alternate days. On an average, the 380 water tankers and 50 mini-lorries are taking 5,000 trips to various parts of the city. Tankers were also bringing water from Mamandur and Palur, making 250 trips from each locality every day.
