Dog to be spared

Purnia (Bihar) Aug.10. The life of a dog, which was ordered to be killed by authorities after it bit over 50 persons, has been saved following appeals by animal rights activists, including the former Union Minister, Maneka Gandhi.

The administration of Bihar's Purnia district has reversed its decision to kill the pet dog that had bitten more than 50 persons in the recent past in a locality here.

The SDO, Jitendra Prasad, had on July 22 ordered the execution of the dog without delay after hearing its owner and complainants of the Shiv Mandir locality. The District Magistrate, Pankaj Kumar, said today that he had received calls from animal rights activists. If the dog was found to have become dangerous enough, it should be banished to some animal home, the callers suggested. ``Acting on the advice, I suggested the SDO to amend his order ," Mr. Kumar said.
