Accountable or stable?

Sir, — K. K. Katyal has reasoned that since the framers of the Constitution preferred accountability to stability, synchronising elections leading to a fixed tenure irrespective of the performance of the Government would go against the basic philosophy of the Constitution ( Aug. 11 ). But today most of the Governments are neither truly representative of the people nor responsible. Both stability and accountability can be ensured only by ushering in a party-less democracy.

P. Vijayaraghavan,
Chennai

Sir, — For over 20 years after Independence, we had simultaneous elections to Parliament and State Assemblies. We have reached a stage when we have frequent elections. There is nothing wrong in the suggestion of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Vice-President for simultaneous elections. One should not see a hidden agenda whenever something is suggested by BJP leaders.

A. Manian,
Udhagamandalam, T.N.
