CANBERRA: Queen Elizabeth's new representative in Australia was sworn in on Monday, three months after her previous envoy in the former British colony was forced to resign in the wake of two sex scandals. Michael Jeffery, a decorated Vietnam War hero, was appointed Australia's 24th Governor-General in a formal ceremony at the national Parliament. He replaces Peter Hollingworth, a former Anglican archbishop, who left the top unelected job in May amid anger over his protection of a paedophile priest in the 1990s and over a 40-year-old, unproven rape case that was eventually dismissed. The furore around Mr. Hollingworth was the biggest scandal to hit the 102-year-old office since 1975, when incumbent Sir John Kerr sacked a Labour government after parliamentary gridlock. He was one of only three Governors-General to quit early. Reuters
