Nortel does not have an R & D centre of its own but sources work to well-known Indian IT majors such as Infosys, Sasken and TCS with its own engineers working in close association. Further outsourcing of R & D will also take place from these companies and broadly in the same areas, said officials. Nortel also outsources some of its requirements from China. Company officials were interacting with newsmen on the occasion of introduction of Ethernet switches BayStack 425, BayStack 5000, Passport 8300 and Passport 1600 to the Indian market as part of its new services-centric networking strategy which is designed to provide local area networks that are fast, simple and reliable. These networks enable voice, data and multimedia communications in a single, converged network. "The strategy supports the buying trend of our customers who are looking to evolve their data networks to support these new services,'' said Ravi Chauhan, Vice-President India, Enterprise Solutions, Nortel Networks For example, Nortel helped the Bombay Stock Exchange merge its local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and VSAT into one core backbone based on one of its Ethernet switches. This new network connects about 3,000 WAN routers to make applications available to over 10,000 trader workstations. UNI reports: The networking strategy also includes Nortel's recently announced portfolio of wireless LAN products, designed for delivering high-bandwith voice and data services securely while allowing end users to have anytime, anywhere access to applications.
