This complaint pertains to a news item published in the aftermath of the death of the former Karnataka Minister, H. Nagappa, while he was under the custody of the forest brigand, Veerappan. The news item TN showed lack of concern, Karnataka guilty of delay: DMK was published on December 10, 2002. The City Public Prosecutor, who filed the complaint, has cited the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, and the TNCC working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, besides the Editor, the Executive Editor and the Printer&Publisher of The Hindu as respondents. Today, counsel for all respondents filed petitions seeking exemption from personal appearance in court. The principal sessions judge, M. Jeyapaul, ordered notices on the petitions and transferred the matter to III Additional Sessions Judge for September 10. Denying Mr. Karunanidhi's statement that the Tamil Nadu Government refused to help Karnataka and delayed sending Kolathur Mani as emissary to Veerappan, and Mr. Elangovan's statement condemning the Tamil Nadu Government's `refusal to extend cooperation to Karnataka', the complainant said the allegations had no basis, and that they had been made to harm the reputation of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa.
