Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Special Correspondent
Replying to a submission by Mathai Chacko (CPI-M) in the Assembly today, the Chief Minister said the Government would communicate its stand to the Centre. Ibrahim, he said, was sought to be deported as he did not produce the documents demanded by the Central authorities. Mr. Antony said the Government would certainly do the follow-up work if Kerala-born Pakistan passport holders, facing deportation, submitted applications individually. The Government viewed it as a humanitarian issue that could not be handled purely on legal grounds, Mr. Antony added. Earlier, Mr. Chacko pointed out that around 400 persons were facing an uncertain future on account of their holding Pakistan passports. Ibrahim himself had ended up in Pakistan after he was promised a job in West Asia. He had worked there for about eight years before returning to India. His case was tragic because attempts to deport him were being made even as he was finding it difficult to make both ends meet, the CPI(M) member said.
