Work on walkway to start next week

By S. Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 11. The work on an ambitious 1.40 crore walkway between the Veli Boat Club and the Akkulam bridge, which would effectively link two tourist destinations in the State capital, is expected to start next week.

The 1.25 km-long and six-foot-wide walkway, to be made from pre-cast concrete slabs, would terminate below the Akkulam bridge on the Kazhakuttom-Kovalam National Highway Bypass. Equipped with handrails made of aluminium to overcome corrosion, the walkway will have two to three steps for tourists to sit and enjoy the scenic beauty.

The work on the walkway, which will jut into the water, has been entrusted to the Irrigation Department.

"The funds for the project has been placed at our disposal and the work is expected to be completed in six months,'' the Executive Engineer in-charge of the project, K. Madhusoodhanan, told The Hindu.

Along with the walkway, a 16-metre-wide suspension bridge would also be built across the T. S Canal, which passes through the locality. The area, where the proposed walkway ends below the bridge, will be developed for car parking.

In the second phase of the project, the walkway will be extended up to Akkulam tourist village so that tourists can stroll from one tourist destination to the other.

As part of giving a facelift to the Akkulam tourist village, the Irrigation department is planning to develop the marshy area in front of the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) for water sports.

The dredging of the lake would commence in one to two months and would be taken up by the Inland Water Transport wing. The depth of the lake would be increased by four to five feet and sidewalls built.

At present, wastewater from the Amayizhanjan canal is contaminating the Akkulam lake and there is a proposal to set up a wastewater treatment plant at the point where the canal joins the lake.

The Department of Ports would undertake a hydrographic survey as part of preparing a master plan for the development of Akkulam. According to the official, the main aim will be to link the two tourist villages.

Meanwhile, the work on the artificial waterfall being built at Akkulam by the District Tourism Promotion Council at a cost of Rs. 22 lakhs commenced today. The waterfall with a water cascade is to be set up in the cliff facing the swimming pool.

The project is to be completed in three months.
