Opposition calls for united fight against AIADMK regime

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI AUG. 11. Opposition leaders called for a combined fight against the AIADMK Government. Addressing a public meeting at Saidapet here tonight, they said the Government, instead of attending to pressing problems such as drought, had been devoting its energies to ``foisting false cases'' on several leaders of the Opposition and defamation cases on the Press.

To achieve the goal of removing the AIADMK Government, the Opposition should remain united and work in a determined manner, the leaders said.

S. Balakrishnan, president, TNCC, which organised the meeting renewed the Congress call to the DMK for quitting the company of the BJP, and said such a movement would consolidate the Opposition unity.

The AIADMK Government, which had been following ``anti-people policies'' should be taught a fitting lesson.

The CPI (M) State secretary, N. Varadharajan, also urged the DMK to quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

He said those who voiced their views against the AIADMK Government had to face legal cases.

It was the BJP backing at the Centre that emboldened the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to bring in legislation on religious conversions and withdraw subsidies for weaker sections.

The DMK deputy general secretary, M.K. Stalin, gave an account of cases filed by the State Government against several political leaders, particularly those from his party. He said the Government by its action was only insulting many political stalwarts and widely respected journals.

R. Nallakannu, CPI leader, said his party and others would not back out of their struggle against the Government just because several cases were filed against them.

The TNCC(I) working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said it was time for the people to emerge as one force against the Government.

Among others who spoke were Thol. Thirumavalan, DPI leader, and S. Peter Alphonse, TNCC general secretary.
