Data released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) show that the mining sector grew by 5.3 per cent in the first quarter against 6.8 per cent in the corresponding period of last year while manufacturing was up 5.5 per cent against 4.1 per cent. With electricity generation marginally up with a 3.9 per cent growth against 3.7 per cent, the overall IIP registered a 5.3 per cent growth against 4.3 per cent. Corresponding figures for June show that mining was up only 5.9 per cent against 9 per cent in June 2002, manufacturing was up 5.8 per cent against 4.2 and electricity generation was up by 4.7 per cent against 3.8 per cent. The overall IIP for June 2003 was higher by 5.7 per cent against a growth rate of 4.5 per cent in June last year.
