Addressing a Press conference here today, the convener of the Vidyarthi Samara Samithy, T.V. Rajesh, said that students were honouring the Government's request to wait till the Supreme Court passed its verdict on the issue. Mr. Rajesh said the agitation had stalled the plans of certain quarters to ``auction'' 100 per cent seats in self-financing colleges without observing merit or reservation quotas. The Government had promised student leaders that 50 per cent merit seat would be ensured in all self-financing colleges. The fees for the merit seats would be the same as that in Government colleges. However, the High Court judgment in the matter was impeding the Government from passing laws to ensure that self-financing colleges adhered to these demands. Hence, the wait for the Supreme Court verdict in the matter, Mr. Rajesh said. He said the student agitation had succeeded in reducing SSLC examination and certificate fees by half. Students belonging to the SC/ST communities had been totally excluded from paying the fees, he said. Mr Rajesh said the stipend of minority community students would be restored. Higher secondary Government schools would be given permission to start new batches.
