Retd. judges panel formed

By A. Subramani

CHENNAI AUG. 13. Three retired Madras High Court judges — Justice K. Sampath, Justice P. Thangavel and Justice Malai. Subramanian — were today appointed to adjudicate representations made by 6,072 government employees and teachers, who were either dismissed or suspended under the Essential Services Maintenance Act following a strike last month.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Justice, B. Subhashan Reddy, nominated them, pursuant to an August 5 Supreme Court order. The apex court mandated them to "decide the representations of the employees without taking into consideration the ordinance amending Section 7 (dismissal) of the Act, and as far as possible in accordance with Conduct Rules (for Government employees) and equity".

A government order today asked the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department to `transfer the connected representations (submitted by the staff) and other papers urgently to the retired judges'.
