New districts despite EC suggestion

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL AUG. 13. Three new districts have been carved out in Madhya Pradesh raising the total number of districts from 45 to 48. The districts are Ashok Nagar, Anuppur and Burhanpur.

A notification to this effect was issued on August 11. Significantly, the decision comes despite the Election Commission's view that the creation of new districts at this juncture would hamper its working and the election machinery that has already been set in motion for the coming Assembly elections.

Orders were issued today to appoint district collectors and superintendents of police for the new districts. A State Government spokesman told this correspondent that the Election Commission had been informed of the decision well in advance.
