Over 70 Dalits injured as Thakurs open fire in U.P. village

MAU (UTTAR PRADESH) AUG. 13. In an outbreak of caste violence, over 70 Dalits were injured, seven of them seriously, when members of the Thakur community opened fire on them following a dispute over a piece of land at a village in this district.

A Home Department spokesman in Lucknow, however, put the number of injured Dalits at 48.

Trouble began when scores of Thakurs arrived at Tejopur village in tractors and tried to forcibly till the disputed land, the possession of which was claimed by Dalits, police sources here said.

When the Dalits resisted, the Thakurs opened fire, injuring over 70 persons.

Seven Thakurs were arrested in connection with the incident and two rifles and five tractors were seized.

The two castes have been involved in a longstanding dispute over the land, which the Thakurs claim to be theirs, while the Dalits said it belonged to the Gram Sabha.

A case on the dispute is pending in court.
