CHENNAI AUG. 13. The police have sounded a general alert in the State to ensure that Independence Day celebrations pass off peacefully.

Heads of the police force in districts, special units and Commissionerates have been asked to make proper security arrangements for the event. The intelligence machinery has been alerted.

Officers have been instructed to strengthen vehicular checks and intensify patrolling, and set up static pickets at vantage points to prevent movements of ``suspected militants''. Personnel involved in guarding VVIPs have been sensitised to be extra careful during the period. Besides the local police, armed reserve and Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel, trained commandos and women personnel are being deployed as part of the bandobust arrangements, according to an official press release.

The police also held a full-scale rehearsal at the Secretariat here in connection with the celebrations.
