KANCHEEPURAM AUG. 13. Nutrition and education are the two main components for a nation's growth, said farm scientist, M.S. Swaminathan, here today.

Delivering the keynote address at the Sri Somasundara Kanya Vidhyalaya (SSKV) schools centenary celebrations, Dr. Swaminathan said, "Nutrition and education are like the legs of the human being," and pointed out that after the `Green Revolution' he had introduced the `sustainable agriculture' programme in 1989.

He said, "If you are planning for one year, you have to plant rice, for 10 years you have to plant trees and for 100 years ahead, you have to educate the people."

M. Anandakrishnan, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, appreciated the tremendous growth of the SSKV schools, which were started exclusively for promotion of women's education in Kancheepuram since 1904. He said the institution had developed a wonderful website. He stressed that all the educational websites should have the three basic features of `knowledge, skill and attitude' and `networking' would be useful to all.

The Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who released the centenary celebrations souvenir, said it would be easy to start an educational institution but would be difficult to maintain and run it for nearly a century.

He praised the institution for providing best quality education for about 7,200 girl students.

Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi said the school had been maintaining discipline and providing very good education in Kancheepuram district.

The school was founded by Diwan Bahadur Sri Somasundara Sastriar in 1904 and had the patronage of Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar.
