Hearing begins in Telecom scam case

NEW DELHI AUG. 15. More than an year after the filing of appeals by the former Union Communications Minister, Sukh Ram, and his two accomplices against their convictions in a telecom equipment purchase scam case of 1996, the Delhi High Court has begun hearing argument.

Mr. Sukh Ram, the former Deputy Director-General (Lease Financing), Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Runu Ghosh, and Pataru Rama Rao, then Managing Director of the Hyderabad-based ARM Pvt. Ltd. which supplied the equipment, have sought setting aside of their convictions.

The Special Judge for the CBI cases, V.K. Jain, had in July last year sentenced Mr. Sukh Ram and Mr. Rao to three years' rigorous imprisonment with Rs. 2 lakhs fine each while Mr. Ghosh was awarded two years' imprisonment with Rs. 1 lakh fine.

The Special Judge found Mr. Sukh Ram, Mr. Ghosh and Mr. Rao guilty of entering into a criminal conspiracy to defraud the exchequer of Rs. 1.66 crores in the supply of telecom equipment by ARM Pvt. Ltd.
