Extortionist shot dead

KOLHAPUR AUG. 15. Suresh Dhanaji Manchekar, who unleashed a reign of terror, targeting businessmen and doctors for extortion in Thane district of Maharashtra, was killed in an encounter with police here today. Acting on a tip-off that Manchekar, also allegedly involved in the murder of the trade union leader, Datta Samant in Mumbai, would arrive in the city, a police team laid a trap near Hotel Ujjwaldeep, police sources said. Police asked him to surrender but he opened fire at the police who retaliated.
