'Maithili language will be in Eighth Schedule'

By K. Balchand

DARBHANGA Aug. 16. The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, spent about 10 minutes wooing the Maithil Brahmins, but without a word on political developments, ahead of next year's parliamentary elections.

Mr. Advani inaugurated a five-minute bulletin in Maithili language by the Akashwani and laid the foundation for the telecast of the DD II channel from here. The meeting was presided over by the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Ravishanker Prasad.

Mr. Advani assured the gathering that the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's announcement to have the Maithili language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution would be implemented. He said development of a language was concomitant with the development of the region, the State and the nation.

He hailed the region for its rich culture and for giving birth to great poets like Vidyapati. He said he was happy to be in the land of Sita Mata after having visited the land of Lord Rama, Ayodhya, in the company of the Prime Minister recently. He also assured all possible Central help to Bihar and was confident that the people would realise their own potential and help the nation to be among the developed countries in the world in the next decade.
