Orissa civic polls on Sept. 19

BHUBANESWAR AUG. 16. Elections to 96 municipal bodies in Orissa, including the municipal corporations of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, will be held on September 19.

A notification in this regard was issued by the State Election Commission here this afternoon. Although party symbols are not used in these elections, the polls will be a popularity test for the ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance.

The polls are important for other major parties as well, since the general elections are due next year.

The Congress has decided to go it alone, while the BJD and BJP are busy finalising their share of seats in the civic bodies spread across the 30 districts of the State.
