The victory also made 23-year-old richer by Rs.40,000 and the amount has certainly comes in handy for Chetan, who will be going on his own Singapore Open championships starting August19. Trupti Murgunde of Maharashtra, the India's No. 3 player and also the third seed here, showed her class in unmistakable terms as she quelled a belated challenge from the Assamese youngster and the National junior champion, Krishna Deka Raja 11-0,13-11 in 29 minutes to bag the women's title. The victory fetched Trupti Rs.20,000 in prize money. In terms of a title contest, the men's final, which lasted over a hour, failed live up to the promise as both the contenders played under their potentials and the rallies were few and sparse. Vidyadhar, however, had the advantage of taking the fight into rival's camp with his attacking game.
Chetan trailed 3-8 in the first game before pulling abreast at 11, with some judicious play from the backcourt. He opened with some stinging half smashes and neat flicks to grab four more points to close the game at 15-11. He, however, couldn't quite keep up the momentum in the second game as Vidyadhar hit back effectively, racing to 7-2 lead, and Chetan began spraying out his returns. Vidyadhar, stretching his lead to 11-6, was very much control of the game and closed it at 15-9. Chetan slowed down the pace in the decider and picked up early points to lead 6-3 and though Vidyadhar caught up with him at 6, Chetan kept his marginal lead throughout and couple of good net dribbles and half smashes, which kissed the lines, saw him forge ahead at 12-8. He was truly in control as he moved to the match point at 14-10 and though there were couple of side overs, which bogged him down for a while, Chetan finally closed the match with a searing smash at 15-11. Trupti, who was originally scheduled to play in the South East Asian Grand Prixs Singapore Open, Malign Open and Indonesian Open, has however pulled out of the tour. The second seeded pair of Sanave Thomas and V. Diju bagged the men's doubles title, beating the National champion pair and the top seed Rupesh Kumar and Markose Bristow at 15-4, 15-5 and split the doubles winner's purse of Rs. 24,000. Mr. M.S. Nayak, General Manager of Canara Bank, which sponsored the championship presided and gave away the prizes. The results (all finals): Men's singles: Chetan Anand (PSPB) bt J.B.S. Vidyadhar (Rly) 15-11, 9-15, 15-11. Men's doubles: Sanave Thomas & V. Diju (Ker) bt Rupesh Kumar & Markose Bristow (PSPB) 15-4, 15-5. Women's singles: Trupti Murgunde (Mah) bt Krishna Deka Raja (Asm) 11-0,13-11.
