Sonal wins title

NEW DELHI AUG. 16. Sonal Phadke defeated the third-seeded Michelle Snyman of South Africa 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the title in the $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament in Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Sonal, seeded four, had earlier knocked out the top-seeded Chin Bee Khoo of Malaysia 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals, on way to her maiden title at this level. She saved three set points in the first set.

Sonal had got past wild card entrant Clara Udofa of Nigeria 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Megha Vakharia went down 2-6, 4-6 to Michelle Snyman in the semifinals, after beating Rebecca Dandeniya of Britain 6-1, 6-2. Megha, however, had little difficulty in clinching the doubles title with Chin Bee Khoo, as the top-seeded pair cruised past Anca Anastasiu of South Africa and Jennifer Debodt of Belgium, hardly dropping a game in the final.

Earlier the Indo-Malaysian combination had beaten Rebecca Dandeniya and Michelle Snyman 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Harsh and Uppal in final: The second-seeded Harsh Mankad and Vishaal Uppal defeated Clanly Shields and Luke Shields of the US 6-4, 6-2 to make the doubles final of the $10,000 Futures tennis tournament in Kenosha, Wisconsin, US.

Mustafa enters doubles final: The top-seeded Mustafa Ghouse and Claude N'Goran of Ivory Coast defeated Josef Nesticky of the Czech Republic and Martin Slanar of Austria 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in making the doubles final of the $15,000 Futures tennis tournament in Lagos, Nigeria.

In the final, Mustafa and Claude will be challenged by the second-seeded willem-Petrus Meyer and Wesley Whitehouse of South Africa, who beat Jaco Mathew and Zibusiso Ncube of Zimbabwe 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the other semifinal.

Ajay Ramaswami bows out: The fourth-seeded Ajay Ramaswami lost rather tamely 4-6, 0-6 to qualifier David Luque of Spain in the quarterfinals of the $10,000 Futures tennis tournament in Carthage, Tunisia.
