DMK will vote against motion

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI AUG. 17. The DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, today said his party would vote against the Congress-sponsored no-confidence motion against the National Democratic Alliance Government.

Speaking to presspersons here, he said the DMK continued to remain in the NDA and hence would not support the motion. "The party leadership held discussions with its representatives in the Union Cabinet, MPs and other leaders, and decided to support the Government."

"Being a constituent of the NDA, how will the DMK support a motion against the Government? The DMK will not be childish in politics. The party will openly oppose any decision of the NDA which went against the principles of the DMK," he said. Asked what his reaction would be if the AIADMK too opposed the motion, Mr. Karunanidhi said the NDA had not approached that party. The AIADMK had on its own volunteered to support the Government.

Asked how long the DMK would continue with its stand, putting up with statements supporting a uniform civil code, ban on cow slaughter and on bringing in legislation for construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya, which were opposed to the party's ideology, Mr. Karunanidhi said it would not back legislation on the temple and the ban on cow slaughter. However, the Congress no-trust vote was not to oppose the Ram temple or a uniform civil code. When these issues were taken up, the DMK would explain its stand.
