Granting bail to Sunanda, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, R.P. Mehta, directed her to be present at the Umra police station on first Monday of every month till a chargesheet is filed. She was also asked to furnish a surety bond of Rs. 25,000 and a cash security of Rs. 50,000, directed to surrender the passport and declare to police if she changed her residential address. Sunanda was present in the court. Sunanda and her husband Surendra are facing charges of hiring gangsters to extort Rs. 80 lakhs from Surat-based Prafful Saree owner Pankaj Agrawal. The amount was payable to Shilpa for an ad-film that she did in 1998. Her advocate Kalpesh Desai argued that the dispute between his client and Agrawal were "civil" in nature and that the civil litigation was converted into a criminal one. Mr. Desai also alleged that the complaint was a "delayed" one and Agrawal had brought to light the alleged telephonic threat almost two months after it is alleged to have occurred. Earlier, Shilpa's father Surendra was granted bail by a local court. PTI
