`Probe raid in Amar Singh's brother's residence'

New Delhi Aug. 19. Samajwadi Party members in both the Houses of Parliament today demanded a probe into the raids by excise officials on the residence and factories owned by the brother of the senior party leader, Amar Singh, in Ghaziabad on Monday night. While the SP chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, sought an inquiry into the affair in the Lok Sabha, his party leader, Ram Gopal Yadav, raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha saying ``the prime motive behind such raids was to insult and harass the family members of Mr. Amar Singh''. Mr. Mulayam said the officials who conducted the raids "did not know that Mr. Amar Singh had resigned from the companies six years ago''. He alleged that some officers had even threatened to write a report against Mr. Amar Singh ``to teach him a lesson when Parliament was in session.'' He also urged the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, to set up an MPs' team to inquire into the incident.

Responding to this, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, said she would inform the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, on the issue. — PTI
