KOCHI. AUG 19. The general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Harkishan Singh Surjeet, has said that his party's support to the Congress would be issue-based. He said that his party would not join a coalition government with the Congress anywhere. Talking to reporters at the Nedumbassery airport near here, the CPI (M) veteran made it clear that it would not be possible for his party, for which support to the working class is a primary cause, to cooperate with the Congress in all respects. He said that the Vajpayee Government had not kept its promises after coming to power. Even while large-scale poverty persisted, the BJP-led Government was keen to exploit communal issues. Responding to the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani's remark that the Opposition lacked leaders, he said it was not so. Our Alappuzha Staff Reporter writes: Earlier in the day, addressing a public meeting at Alappuzha after laying the foundation stone for the party's district committee office named after the veteran leader, P. Krishna Pillai., Mr. Surjeet said that the CPI (M)'s view was that the Congress stood for the interests of the national bourgeoise. The BJP is another bourgeois party. As in the case of the Congress, the BJP also protects the interests of monopolies, Mr. Surjeet said. He emphasised the need to organise agitations to safeguard the interests of the people. Mr. Surjeet noted that the Union Government and the State Government were withdrawing many welfare schemes. The view of his party was that education should be imparted free of cost to all. He criticised the policies of the United Democratic Front Government in Kerala in the education sector. The CPI (M) general secretary lauded Kerala's contribution to the Communist movement. The Leader of the Opposition in the State, V. S. Achuthanandan, presided over the function. Those who spoke included the CPI (M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, party Central Committee member and former Chief Minister, E. K. Nayanar and another Central Committee member, S. Ramachandran Pillai.
