Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to "The challenge of diabetes" (Aug. 19). It is appropriate as India is facing a serious socioeconomic burden due to the high prevalence of Type 2 diabetes. The effort of the Indian company in manufacturing human insulin is certainly praiseworthy but the contribution of the two major multinationals over the past three decades should also be appreciated. They made insulin available in every part of the country at a reasonable cost. There has also been no problem with the semi-synthethic insulin. This too deserves public attention. Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Chennai * * * Sir, The age of the onset of diabetes is decreasing from late 50s to 30s. And the prevalence of co-morbid conditions like high blood pressure, cardiac diseases and renal disorder is also increasing which affects the diabetics' quality of life. As you have rightly pointed out, massive public awareness programmes should be conducted. Dr. T. Palanichamy, Tiruchi, T.N.
