Boisterous revelry marks Gokulashtami

Mumbai Aug 20. Even as a chorus of `Govinda Ala Re' reverberated through the air, boisterous revellers precariously balanced on each other's shoulders, groped their way skyward, to break earthen pots brimming over with curd, on the occasion of Gokulashtami.

Burnt sienna pots overflowing with `dahi' and decorated with fresh mango leaves, flaming orange marigold flowers and cool cucumbers dotted the skyline in various parts of the State to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. In Mumbai, the revellers made their way through the narrow bylanes, dancing to the fast-paced beats of the drums, even as they were drowned in buckets of water by onlookers. The city witnessed heady competition as professional groups competed with each other to break the traditional `dahi handis' to claim bumper cash prizes ranging from Rs. 15,000 to over a lakh. A special prize of Rs. 5 lakh was also offered by a local MLC to any group which could form a nine-level pyramid against the current eight-level one.— PTI
