BJP reviews vote outcome

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG 20. The net political effect of the two-day debate on the no-confidence motion against the Vajpayee Government was today reviewed and analysed by the top Bharatiya Janata Party leaders at the Prime Minister's residence. And the conclusion drawn was that the entire exercise has ``recoiled'' on the Congress.

Besides the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani, the Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, and the BJP president, Venkaiah Naidu, were present.

The leaders were satisfied that the challenge of the no-confidence motion was successfully turned into an opportunity, as Mr. Naidu later put it.

He pointed out that while the allies and friends of the National Democratic Alliance presented a ``remarkable picture of unity'' the fractures in the Opposition were more than obvious. ``The impression that the debate gave was that the Congress was in the dock,'' Mr. Naidu said.

The top BJP leadership is so pleased with its own performance during the debate that it has decided to make the no-confidence motion itself an issue in the forthcoming Assembly polls. ``The two-day debate on the no-confidence motion has registered a significant triumph, and not just of our numerical strength but it has enabled us to present to Parliament and to the people a comprehensive picture of the remarkable achievements of the NDA government,'' Mr. Naidu told reporters later.
