Letters to the Editor
Sir, The debate on the `no-confidence motion,' which was telecast live, was no compliment to the Members of Parliament. Opposition members were intolerant and seemed interested in disturbing the proceedings making one wonder if they were interested in the debate at all. Debate in a parliamentary democracy is expected to be decent and meaningful. When the result was a foregone conclusion, the Opposition parties should not have the wasted precious time of Parliament and spoilt its image.
C. Lakshmi Narain,
Sir, The way our representatives behaved is really demoralising. They did not even show the customary respect to the senior parliamentarians. The image of those entrusted with the framing of laws and leading the country is really disheartening.
Monica Kushwaha,
Sir, In "The politics of no-confidence" ( Aug. 21 ), you have rightly said, "the level of the parliamentary debate was one of the lowest witnessed in recent times." It was a sad spectacle to see many members reading out from the rule-book. At one point, even the Speaker showed annoyance. I remember what the former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, M. Ananthasayanam Ayyangar, once told me about Jawaharlal Nehru who used to bow to him when he entered Parliament and sought his permission if he had to leave the House in the midst of the proceedings. S. Gopalakrishnan, Chennai
