Optimistic note

Sir, — The Supreme Court's decision to ban the capitation fee in private colleges is a blessing. We hope that fair play and common entrance tests will relieve the students and their parents of heavy financial pressures. The judgment will help prevent corruption and the minting of black money.

Debanjana Choudhuri,
Dhenkenal, Orissa

Sir, — While the verdict is a welcome relief, the ambiguity of the judgment will no doubt be exploited by private medical colleges. You are right in saying that some of the better colleges will set their fees beyond the reach of the needy students. This fee structure is no different from the present capitation system.

Joseph K. Joseph,
Chennai
