Keeping camel not offence: HC

Kochi Aug. 21. Keeping a camel is not an offence either under the Indian Penal Code or provisions of the law relating to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Kerala High Court today held and directed release of an animal to its owner.

The court quashed the case registered by the Hosdurg police against a person hailing from Kasaragod for purchasing a camel from Karnataka.

According to police, the camel was bought by the petitioner, C.P. Abu Backer, of Cherkaka in Kasaragod district for its meat.

Earlier, on the basis of newspaper reports, the Hosdurg Magistrate had directed police to register a case under the provisions of IPC and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Police seized the camel and produced it before the Hosdurg Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, which directed that the animal be left in the custody of the Dean of Veterinary College, Mannuthy.

Challenging the proceedings, the petitioner approached the High Court. — PTI
