SINGAPORE: The Singapore Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, has named Lee Hsien Loong, currently Deputy Prime Minister, as his successor to the country's top executive position. Speaking at a National Day rally here, Mr. Goh said he had decided to step down as Prime Minister "before the next general election'', which would be due by 2007. Saying that he was "bringing up the subject of political succession now'' so as to prepare the people for the change he had in mind, Mr. Goh said, though he was "not stepping down yet''. His "immediate priority'' was to get Singapore out of its present "economic gloom''. Mr. Goh said: "Ideally, I would like to give my successor at least two years to establish himself as Prime Minister before he fights the next general election''.
